The first step to begin your spiritual growth journey is simply to decide to follow Jesus.
Jesus is the Eternal Son of God who stepped into His creation 2,000 years ago in the form of a man and had the greatest impact on humanity in all recorded history. Without wealth, armies, political power, or formal education, He has done more to change the world for good than anyone ever has.
“He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
-Matthew 16:15–16
Jesus confirmed His divinity by revealing life-changing truth, performing miraculous works, including supernatural healings and resurrections, and exercising control over the material world by commanding storms, walking on water, and multiplying fish and bread. His life fulfilled ancient biblical prophecies detailing His birth, manner of life, and even the time and manner of His death. He predicted His crucifixion at the hands of the religious leaders and Romans, and also His subsequent resurrection three days later. He rose from the dead, leaving an empty tomb and revealing Himself to hundreds of His followers, many of whom would give their lives to testify to His resurrection.
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures...”
-1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Jesus suffered and died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins and to purchase your life for God. His death, burial, and resurrection guarantee forgiveness of sins and eternal life with God to all who follow Him. Following Jesus is as simple as letting go of control over your sinful life and embracing Him as your Lord and Savior. When you follow Him, you are trusting Him to take the lead and be in charge of your life. The trust you place in Him to guide your decisions and govern your actions is called faith or belief.
"...these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name."
-John 20:31
The next step after deciding to follow Jesus is making your faith public through water baptism.
Jesus commands all His followers to be baptized.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit"
-Matthew 28:19
Water baptism is a graphic illustration of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, serving as a public testimony to a person’s repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. It's also an affirmation of the one true God, as a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
"Therefore, we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life."
-Romans 6:4
Anyone who wholeheartedly turns from their sins and trusts Jesus Christ to be their Lord and Savior can be baptized. Faith in Jesus qualifies a person for baptism, as evidenced by the conversation between Philip, the deacon-evangelist, and the Ethiopian eunuch.
Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, he preached Jesus to him. As they went along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." And he ordered the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him."
-Acts 8:35–38
